Local Music: The Knowmads

31 Aug

Not only did I hit the road to bring you guys a live concert experience, I am also proud to announce that this will be our first Local Music Artist Spotlight! The Knowmads are a four piece band hailing from Marlboro, NJ. Although the band has only been together for a little over a month, the chemistry between the band members is incredible. They are all very talented musicians who really have a feel for music. Their jams are awesome and make you want to dance and their ability to seamlessly change genres on a dime serves as a tribute to their talent. This is the second show they have ever played together and it was a great time (I wasn’t at their first show because I was seeing Sound Tribe Sector 9). The members have gone off to college for now but come Thanksgiving Break I will hopefully have some new music from The Knowmads for everyone to enjoy. I’ve posted some live videos along with a sound board recording so that everyone can put them on their ipods and and enjoy their music on the go 🙂

P.S. If any other bands want us to post their music, feel free to email your stuff with a small description of the band to

New Dub Kweli

29 Aug

In our first post we showed you a song from producer Max Tannone, creator of projects like Mos Dub and Jaydiohead. I just recieved an email from Max Tonnone showing Turn Up Your Speakers his new project, Dub Kweli. This is just like the reggae dub remix of Mos Def, but this time it’s Black Star’s other half, Talib Kweli. Talib is a sick rapper and the reggae dubs fit perfectly. Download it here.

Kanye West – Monster (ft. Jay-Z, Rick Ross, Bon Iver, & Nicki Minaj)

28 Aug

New, new, new! Here’s the second track off Kanye’s and Jay-Z’s new album, Watch the Throne. Kanye and Jay-Z obviously bring it and even though I’m not much of a Nicki Minaj or Rick Ross fan, this is a pretty good track. It’ll be interesting to see what kind of magic Kanye and Jay-Z can make together. Check it out.

Artist Spotlight: El Ten Eleven

27 Aug

El Ten Eleven is a great post-rock duo out of California. The uniqueness of the band lies in their ability to create beautiful instrumental composition with only two musicians. Using a double necked guitar/bass and heavy looping, the band creates an organic ambient atmosphere with their music. The simple rhythms laid down by guitarist Kristian Dunn, result in texturized dance jams that are full of emotion. El Ten Eleven’s fourth album, It’s Still Like A Secret, is said to be released sometime in 2010.

Watch this video until at least 3:55, it gets really cool!

Artist Spotlight: Brazilian Girls

25 Aug

No, they aren’t from Brazil. And okay they only have one girl in the band, but either way, if you haven’t heard of Brazilian Girls, you should check them out. They are not a new band. Their first album was released in 2005 and they haven’t released an album in two years, but nevertheless, good music is, well, good music. They have a unique brand of electronic music. Its weird and groovy and dancey and a whole lot more. Some of their songs are a little dirty, but you can tell its all in good fun. Check them out.

Artist Spotlight: One Mighty Atom

23 Aug

I discovered One Mighty Atom a while back and fell in love with their unique style of psychedelic funk music. I really don’t know very much about them. Their website has access to download their music, a very strange description of the band, and a few articles about some festivals they played but other than that it doesn’t look like the band is very active. Regardless they are a very cool band and are definitely worth a listen.

Artist Spotlight: Easy Star All-Stars

22 Aug

Easy Star All-Stars are a reggae dub band that remakes entire famous rock albums and transforms them into unbelievable reggae songs. Their first release was a reggae reinterpretation of Pink Floyd’s, Dark Side of the Mood, called Dub Side of the Moon. Since then, the Easy Star All-Stars have recreated Radiohead’s, Ok Computer, and turned it into Radiodread and, most recently, redid The Beatles’, Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, and called it Easy Star’s Lonely Hearts Dub Band. It’s understandable that one would  be skeptical of this kind of remake of classic tunes, but the Easy Star All-stars flawlessly recreate these epic album. They make theses albums their own, but also make sure not to lose sight of the original. The Easy Star All-stars also released an original album called Until That Day and have redid Umphrey’s Mcgee’s (one of our favorite bands) Turn & Run and reshaped it into Turn & Dub. Check out the songs we posted and if you are a particular fan of either Pink Floyd, Radiohead, or The Beatles or just like what we have posted, I suggest you purchase the full albums because it’s amazing to hear and compare each album in its entirety to the original.

New J. Cole – No Holding Me Back

21 Aug

More and more J. Cole and I don’t think I have to tell you that it’s obviously as good as usual. Unfortuantly this is tagged a lot but nevertheless, check out J. Cole rapping over Rick Ross’, Tears Of Joy instrumental.
