A Journey Through J. Dilla’s Rock Crates Part I

29 Oct

j-dilla-sometimes.jpg J Dilla image by Victor_Aguero

J Dilla (February 7, 1974 – February 10, 2006) was a DJ with an incredible ear for samples. This is a mix by a DJ named Bowls who uses J Dilla’s rock samples to make a mix of his own. This  mix really shows how diverse  Dilla’s taste in music was. He was very patient. He listened for good samples in songs and wasn’t afraid to let it play long. Its a 37 min mix, I recommend listening to the whole thing. (my favorite  parts are around 7:00 & 25:30.) Its a very unique chill mix.

So Long, Pluto

4 Oct

First off I want to say that I love this band’s name mainly because my children will never know of the lost planet of Pluto. My Very Eager Mother Just Served Us Nine … will forever be an incomplete pneumonic. So Long, Pluto is a 5-piece band out of Scranton, PA that formed in early 2008. I actually met these guys in a bar last week while I was in Scranton for a medical school interview. I overheard them discussing what time signature the song that was playing at the bar was in and I just had to chime in. We had a pretty good conversation about musicianship and various bands and I offered to do an artist spotlight on their band. The band is made up of  a keyboardist, two guitars and a drummer along with a violinist which adds a unique spin to the stereotypical template of two guitarist, a bassist and a drummer to which so many bands ascribe. This song is called “Everything You’re Not” and was just released today. Definitely check out their myspace and facebook and pick up their album Come Revisit El Paso! here.

A fresh new music video from one of my favorites, Dr. Dog, of their song “Shadow People” off their most recent album Shame, Shame. Great song, great video! Enjoy!

Local Music: Frantic Recovery

9 Sep

Frantic Recovery is a punk rock/alternative band out of Salem, VA. This music video for “Bullets in a Bottle” is one of the most creative concepts for a song I’ve seen. I really enjoy how the video was filmed and I think it goes very well with the song. Check out Frantic Recovery’s myspace here to listen to some of there other songs and pick up their albums here on itunes.
