The MacPodz describe themselves as “Alien Exhaust Jazz Meets Townie F**K Rock.. One of the coolest party’s on planet earth!” Now just because I have no idea what that means doesn’t mean that this band isn’t amazing. One of the only guitar-less, five piece jambands I know of, The MacPodz’ music stretches from jazz to funk and everything in between. It actually took me about 10 minutes of listening before I realized that they don’t have a guitarist. Bass, trumpet, percussion/flute, keys, and drums is a rather refreshing break from the stereotypical model of what a jamband is. The MacPodz are definitely a band that should be in any music lovers ipod. Here’s a live recording of them performing at All Good Music Festival this past summer (the whole show is awesome but Track Four is especially cool because a short beatbox/flute solo). For more shows check out their archive page here.
Based on the set lists and reviews I’ve read it sounds like Umphrey’s McGee tore it up this weekend. I found a recording of a debute mash-up “Mark On The Bus” mashing Rage Against The Machine’s “Bulls On Parade” with The Beastie Boys “Mark On The Bus”. Unfortunately I don’t have a recording of it but you can listen to it here. Its a really sick mash-up.
Here’s their set list from 10/30

Exciting news from the world of Umphrey’s McGee! Starting this fall, Umphrey’s will begin rolling out some new music for all of us to enjoy. To kick things off they have released a new studio single titled “Wellwishers”. Its a pretty chill track and it definitely has potential for some wicked live jams.
Bridging a mix between electronic inspired beats and melodies, and the improvisation and live feel of jambands, Organik Time Machine’s music is meant to reach a wide variety of music fans. OTM is a very talented group of musicians creatively blending live electronica with elements of funk, hip hop, reggae, and jazz into their unique blend of high energy Livetronica. You can download free live shows at their archive page here.
The Santa Cruz Hemp Allstar are possibly one of the greatest super-jam groups every conceived. The band consists of David Murphy (Sound Tribe Sector 9) on bass, Jeffree Lerner (Sound Tribe Sector 9) on percussion/effects, Zach Velmer (Sound Tribe Sector 9) on drums, Aron Magner (The Disco Biscuits) on keyboard, Jason Concepcion (Netwerk:Electric) on guitar/effects and John Whooley (Estradasphere) on saxophone/vocals. The band is truly amazing, playing completely unrehearsed improvised jam sessions at each performance. Unfortunately, the band has only played a total of six shows since they debuted in 2001. Seeing them live would truly be an amazing experience however sadly I haven’t heard anything about them coming back together any time soon. Below I have posted a show that I converted from files I got off of archive.org. I also found an awesome video of a full Santa Cruz Hemp Allstars set from 2002 that you can check out here.
