Artist Spotlight: The MacPodz

1 Nov

The MacPodz describe themselves as “Alien Exhaust Jazz Meets Townie F**K Rock.. One of the coolest party’s on planet earth!” Now just because I have no idea what that means doesn’t mean that this band isn’t amazing. One of the only guitar-less, five piece jambands I know of, The MacPodz’ music stretches from jazz to funk and everything in between.  It actually took me about 10 minutes of listening before I realized that they don’t have a guitarist. Bass, trumpet, percussion/flute, keys, and drums is a rather refreshing break from the stereotypical model of what a jamband is. The MacPodz are definitely a band that should be in any music lovers ipod. Here’s a live recording of them performing at All Good Music Festival this past summer (the whole show is awesome but Track Four is especially cool because a short beatbox/flute solo). For more shows check out their archive page here.

Umphrey’s McGee Halloween Monster Mash-Up

1 Nov

Based on the set lists and reviews I’ve read it sounds like Umphrey’s McGee tore it up this weekend. I found a recording of a debute mash-up “Mark On The Bus”  mashing Rage Against The Machine’s “Bulls On Parade” with The Beastie Boys “Mark On The Bus”. Unfortunately I don’t have a recording of it but you can listen to it here. Its a really sick mash-up.

Here’s their set list from 10/30

I: All In Time > The Linear, Red Tape, Tribute to the Spinal Shaft (w/Chris Wood), Bulls on Mark (Bulls On Parade/Mark On the Bus mash-up) > Front Porch, Cemetery Walk II
II: In Bloom > Booth Love, Rocker II > In the Kitchen, Miss Tinkle’s Overture > Andy’s Last Beer, Higgins > Miss Tinkle’s Overture
E: Push the Pic > All In Time

Set list from 10/31

I: Ocean Billy > Conduit, Nothing Too Fancy > Hangover, November Walk [Guns N’ Roses/Cemetery Walk], Women Wine & Song > Ocean Billy, 1348 > The Way You Rule The World [Tears for Fears/ Michael Jackson] > 1348
II: The Triple Wide > Bitter Sweet Haji [The Verve/Hajimemashite], Bridgeless > Walletsworth, “Top 10 mash-up costumes,” Prowler > Bridgeless, SOciable Jimmy > Nothing Too Fancy, 1901 Jump You [Phoenix/Van Halen/Cee Lo Green], Bright Lights
E: JaJunk > Don’t Stop the Spirit of the Radio [Journey/Rush] > JaJunk

You can buy the show from 10/30 and 10/31 on their website.

Asher Roth – Break The Silence Ft. Big Prime

1 Nov

Finally, some more new Asher! As a long time Asher fan, I really can appreciate how much Asher has grown as an artist. Asher has that new college flow, but you really can see the roots of hip hop in his rhymes and beats. This one is a little more raw than usual Asher, but he’s really doing his thing. Can’t wait for Spaghetti Tree to drop. Last I heard, the release date was 4/20/11. I guess we’ll have to see. Hopefully we will get some more new tracks. Thanks allcitychessclub for this one.

Zac White

31 Oct

Zac White is an up and coming pop/hip-hop rapper/producer that was shown to us by one of his fans. Zac is a sophomore at the University of Arizona and has opened for Sam Adams and has been in the studio with St. Louis’s Murphy Lee. He also has an anthem for the University of Arizona that is played at every home football game. Zac has that great new college rap sound and has a smooth flow and beats. This is a guy to look for in the future. Check him out and make sure to visit his reverbnation to download his music and like him on facebook.

Hudson Mohawke: BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix

29 Oct

The BBC Radio 1 Essential Mixes never cease to amaze me. One of my favorite EMs is Hudson Mohawke. His gltichy hip hop style is one of a kind. In this mix you’ll hear Hudson Mo’s  spin on Lil Wayne, Ludacris, Twista, Pharell and much more.

A Journey Through J. Dilla’s Rock Crates Part I

29 Oct

j-dilla-sometimes.jpg J Dilla image by Victor_Aguero

J Dilla (February 7, 1974 – February 10, 2006) was a DJ with an incredible ear for samples. This is a mix by a DJ named Bowls who uses J Dilla’s rock samples to make a mix of his own. This  mix really shows how diverse  Dilla’s taste in music was. He was very patient. He listened for good samples in songs and wasn’t afraid to let it play long. Its a 37 min mix, I recommend listening to the whole thing. (my favorite  parts are around 7:00 & 25:30.) Its a very unique chill mix.
